Q&A for new and newish indexers
New and newish indexers or people curious about the possibility are invited to gather at Scott Smiley’s house, where he will host a round table question-and-answer time. Carpooling will be available from the SpringHill Marriott for the short drive to Scott’s house.

Saturday September 14, 8:30 am – 5:30 p.m.
SpringHill Marriott, Vancouver, WA

Come for great opportunities to network and for an informative, productive, and enjoyable program that includes:

  • Technical Indexes with a Structured approach
Angela Howard will share information about technical indexes and her adaptation of the “Brilliantly Structured Indexes” process developed by Fred Leise.
  • Client Relationships
A panel including Scott Smiley, Carolyn Weaver, and Madge Walls will explore approaches to communicating with clients, with special attention to style specifications, contracts, and handling difficult situations.
  • Index Comparison
A small and large group activity that involves one book, two indexes for the book, and activities that lead participants in a comparison and contrast of the two indexes. We’ll focus on audience, usability, and access, as well as how the indexes handle subheadings, the metatopic, and gathering scattered topics.
  • Embedding Index Tags in XML Files
Angela Howard will demonstrate how to manually embed XML index tags in XML files, explaining how it is less difficult than you may think. She will also discuss a couple of alternative approaches that might make it easier.
  • Bidding and Rates
A panel including Scott Smiley, Maria Sosnowski, and Madge Walls will address principles of bidding on jobs. They will discuss factors that affect the bid, how to find a rate that is competitive without being too low, when to raise rates and how to handle special requests. A sample bidding opportunity will give hands-on practice.
