Emma Warnken Johnson
“Flowchart for Passing Mentions”
Sometimes deciding what not to index is even harder than deciding what to include. The definition of a passing mention is subjective and flexible—as it should be—but it can lead to a lot of uncertainty and decision fatigue. During a particularly challenging project with lots of potential passing mentions, Emma created a flow chart to help her make consistent decisions about what should be indexed and what should be left on the page. In this presentation, she’ll talk about how and why she put together her flow chart and how she uses it in her indexing practice.
Emma is a freelance academic editor and indexer, primarily working in the humanities and social sciences. In 2025, she’ll reach her 15th anniversary in publishing and will (hopefully!) write her 50th index. Find Emma at www.emmawjohnson.com.
Following Emma’s presentation, indexers will have the opportunity to join one of three Breakout Rooms. The 30-minute sessions will provide time for introductions and discussion. The annual Board meeting will follow the breakout rooms, after a brief break. All chapter members are welcome to attend!

Registration is free for PNW chapter members, $5 for ASI members who are not PNW members, and $10 for everyone else.
