Elizabeth Bartmess wins Purple Pen Award

Congratulations to PNW member Elizabeth Bartmess on winning the Purple Pen Award for 2023. The Institute of Certified Indexers (ICI) recognized Elizabeth for her index for the book Immanent Critiques: The Frankfurt School Under Pressure by Martin Jay, published in 2023 by Verso. The three anonymous judges noted that Elizabeth created an effective index for this very difficult scholarly collection of essays by setting up a solid structure to link the various discussions of the main themes with a network of cross references.

Elizabeth started indexing in 2022 and wasted no time in becoming an active participant in PNW. She volunteers as co-webmaster, as co-chair for programming, and as the manager of the listserv. Her indexing training includes American Society for Indexing’s Module A and the UC Berkeley’s extension course.  Her other education includes an MS in Information, an MS in Psychology, and a Certificate in Culture and Cognition from the University of Michigan. Her BA is in Psychology from Rice University. Before indexing, she worked in data management and statistical programming, project management, and writing and editing.

Additional information about ICI can be found at their website, www.certifiedindexers.com. 2023 was the tenth and final year for the Purple Pen Award.
